What is Urdu to English Conversion?

This Urdu to English converter performs transliteration — it converts Urdu script (Perso-Arabic) into Roman English letters while keeping the words Urdu. For example, شکریہ becomes shukriya and محبت becomes mahabat. This Roman-letter style of writing Urdu is popularly called Roman Urdu — the same style used every day in WhatsApp chats, YouTube comments, and song lyric videos across India and Pakistan.

This is the reverse of our English to Urdu typing tool, where you type in English letters and get Urdu script. Together, the two tools let you move freely in both directions between Roman and Urdu writing.

A Note on Accuracy

Urdu script normally omits short vowels — the marks called zabar, zer, and pesh are rarely written. That means the exact vowels of a word are not present in the text itself; native readers fill them in from experience. Our converter maps every Urdu letter faithfully, honours any vowel marks that are written, and intelligently inserts light vowels between consonants so the result stays readable. Common words come out well; for rare words you may want to adjust a vowel or two. No rule-based tool can do better without a full dictionary — and unlike heavy server-based tools, this one is instant and completely private.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does this tool translate Urdu to English?

No — it transliterates. The Urdu words stay Urdu, but written in English letters. شکریہ becomes shukriya, not "thank you". For typing Urdu script from English letters, use our English to Urdu typing tool.
